Billions in infrastructure spending to combat climate change will need to be protected against fraud

As climate change threatens the United States’ coastlines, the federal government has responded with a wave of spending to support what is being called the “blue economy.”  Across nearly 100,000 shoreline miles, from New England to Florida, around the Great Lakes, and across the Gulf and West Coasts, revenue and jobs are generated by a variety of “blue” industries, among them marine transportation, offshore renewable energy, seafood, fishing, and coastal travel and tourism. Supreme Court declines to hear three False Claims Act cases: What it means for whistleblowers

How much detail do whistleblowers need about false claims made by their employers in order for a case to proceed? The statute of limitations for civil and criminal fraud enforcement on the Paycheck Protection Program and the Small Business Administration’s COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan programs were recently extended to 10 years after President Biden signed two bills into law in August.  “Anyone who defrauded these critical … [Read more...]

Wanted: Whistleblowers can help claw back billions in Covid relief fraud

The Covid pandemic brought to light another widespread illness — rising fraud against U.S. taxpayers.  To be sure, the figures are staggering. Pandemic fraud alone ate up an estimated $80 billion of intended small business relief, $90 billion of unemployment relief, and $80 billion from a separate Covid relief program, according to NBC News. Government statistics keep rising but have yet to catch up to those estimates. Unfortunately, those staggering fraud estimates dwarf the $62 billion … [Read more...]
